What the heck is MeshTek™?
ilumi has a secret sauce for the wireless connectivity which is what makes ilumi genuinely unique from all other smart lighting and smart home products. This secret is our patented Bluetooth® wireless meshing technology that we've dubbed "MeshTek."
We have created this wireless Bluetooth mesh network, through which all of our Bluetooth LED Smartbulbs can communicate to each other. Other mesh technologies exist, but ilumi MeshTek is the only mesh network that has both broadcast and connection-based meshing.
What's the difference between broadcast and connection meshing?
Broadcast-based Mesh Network
A broadcast mesh network means that two devices are calling out to each other over the air, and hopefully receiving each other's messages.
It's like using a megaphone to shout to a crowd of people.
But the further away people are from the megaphone, the quieter the message gets, so they may not receive your entire message.
It's great for sending small data packets of information to other Bluetooth devices within range:
- simple on/off commands
- change colors on the ilumi LED Smartbulb
Connection-based Mesh Network
A connection mesh network allows two devices to connect directly to each other, and at this point, the real fun can begin.
Rather than shouting to another device over the air (like shouting into a megaphone to a large crowd), you are instead connecting directly to the devices as though you are on a conference call with an entire group of people.
Then, that group of people can connect with another group of people. It's the game of Telephone but with Bluetooth!
The significant benefit of a connection-based mesh network is your Bluetooth devices can connect directly to transfer large data packets:
- firmware updates
- scheduling data
We are now licensing out this technology so other manufacturers can create their own ilumi-connected smart devices, just like the ilumi LED Smartbulb.
Imagine all the possibilities within your own home:
- Small appliances: smoke alarms, thermostats, microwaves, televisions
- Large appliances: refrigerators, stoves, washing machines
- Outdoor structures: electric fences, sprinkler systems
- Home & wearable accessories: dog collars, baby monitors, etc.
The list is endless. We've spent years developing this technology, and we hope to help other companies save time and get their smart technology to market much sooner.
Get Started with Our Development Kit
We offer a development kit that will allow other product manufacturers to quickly create integrate their iOS and Android app with the mesh technology.
