The ilumi team recently participated and helped sponsor Dallas's first major student hackathon HackDFW. The 24-hour hackathon brought 500 students from universities across the country came together in Fair Park to create and hack together exciting and new programs and technologies. It was the first time the ilumi SDK has been made available for a Hackathon, and because of the fantastic result, it will definitely not be the last.
The winner of the ilumi LED Smartbulbs challenge was iHeartPaint, an app using the Pebble Smartwatch to change the ilumi's colors and reflect a specific paint swatch on the wall. Their pitch was simple: "As a do-it-yourself person, iheartpaint will be able to help you plan your next room remodel... show clients more than just a paint swatch; they can give them a full display on their wall of the color creating a better experience for the customer."
Thanks to Kelby, Michael S., Dylan, Zach, and Michael W. for their creativity and ingeniuity!
iHeartPaint was one of many ingenious programs for ilumi Smartbulbs that came from the 24-hour event, including Warm, a weather notification app and Party Saver, an app to alert you when your parents are dangerously close to home!
The top hacks were pitched at the closing of the Hackathon, to a panel of prestigious judges:
- Mark CubanOwner of the Dallas Mav, and Shark Tank investor in ilumi
- Tom Foley, Principal, IF Motivated, LLC.
- Michael Irvin, Principal, IF Motivated, LLC., NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys.
- Michelle Miller, President of Verizon Wireless, Central Texas Region.
- Doug Parker, CEO of American Airlines
- Mike Rawlings, Elected City of Dallas Mayor
It was a huge learning experience for all of us here at ilumi and we enjoyed hanging with such smart students! And we definitely look forward to seeing what these guys can create at next year's HackDFW. Great job, everyone!
