ilumi LED Smart Light Bulbs (ft. MeshTek Bluetooth Mesh) are a great way to spice up your home or office, but much like a TV remote, nobody likes it when one person is hogging control and having all the fun. Fret not – the ilumi app has a little known feature that not only allows you to share access to your ilumi with friends, family or roommates, but also allows you to setup multiple ‘networks’ (locations) of ilumi so that they can only control ilumi that you give them access to.
"But they’re MY lights, why would I want to share? They should get their own ilumi if they want to use it so badly."
We totally agree, they most certainly should get their own ilumi. However, we believe sharing is caring, so we thought we’d highlight a few specific use cases that take full advantage of both multi-user access and multi-network (location) capabilities.
Roommates/Friends/Social Gatherings: Keeping your housemates happy is key to any successful roommate relationship, and with ilumi in the mix, sharing access to lighting in common areas is easy way appease your cohabitants. Your roomies will love showing ilumi off to all of their friends and significant others, because let’s be honest, who doesn’t love pretty, colored lighting?
Spouse/Family/Kids: Much like having roommates, if your spouse or significant other isn’t happy with you, you’ll surely know about it. What if your wife or boyfriend absolutely has to have control of the ilumi in the living room for book club or the big game, yet you're out of town? Easy fix--just invite them to share access to your ilumi, even if you're on the other side of the country. You can rest easy knowing they'll be appeased with the perfect reading light or custom touchdown celebration effects using IFTTT.
If you have a child that’s old enough to have a mobile device, then you have a child that’s old enough to appreciate the joy and responsibility of controlling their own lighting (with your permission, of course). This is especially useful for getting your kids to bed on time (first one in bed gets to pick night light color?) or waking them up early with a custom sunrise.
Rental Property/Office Use: For those who own multiple homes, rental properties or have ilumi at both their home and office, multiple locations and multi-user access is right up your alley. Having the ability to toggle between a home network and office network makes it easy to organize your ilumi. If you have house guests or are renting out your apartment for the weekend, your tenants will absolutely love painting their temporary space in any color they can imagine.
Pretty useful, wouldn’t you agree? We knew you wanted to share all along. However, it’s worth noting that a single ilumi cannot be connected to two devices at the same time. But there’s an easy fix for that—simply force close the ilumi app on your device, and your counterpart can open the ilumi app on their device and resume control.
